Do’s + Don’ts of COLLEGE // Tips & Tricks

Hey Guys!!

So we’re two weeks into school or maybe three; first off congrats on your new journey freshmen and have a good semester, as well as everyone else. Better late than never, but here are a few Do’s and Don’ts of College to get you through the 4 years, alongside some Tips and Tricks.

P.S. This is just a practical list of what I learnt during my time.

College:

Do’s

  • Get a Job – Whether on campus or part-time off campus *once it’s legal*. This is a great way to start building your resume with experience or just to have a few extra bucks on hand.
  • Be Social – Most of the opportunities you will get are from people you meet and interact with, therefore NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. A good way to do this is to join organizations; there are a wide range on campus so you must find one or two.
  • Remember your Health – Physically, Β ever heard of freshman 15? P.S. the gym on campus is free (fees are usually included in your tuition), so why not? Mentally, school can be stressful at times, if you need to talk to anyone there’s always a counselor on campus.
  • Ask for Help – Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it, there’s always somebody willing to help. Different classes may have supplementary classes or tutor sessions.

Don’ts

  • Buy Books from the Campus Bookstore – Unless it’s your very LAST option. Renting used textbooks is the way to go, and so much cheaper. Especially from online sites, my go to was Chegg.
  • Forget to have Fun – Yes, you’re there to learn, but don’t forget to also enjoy the college life experience. #YOLO Go to a party or two, football/basketball games, homecoming activities, just be involved and HAVE FUN.
  • Skip Class – *maybe I should say often* However you are paying tuition for a reason so attend class regularly and pay attention. Professors normally give an allotted amount of classes you may miss a semester, so use them wisely.
  • Spend too much – A tricky one for me, but learn to budget and save! Cook if you must, get a meal plan, coupons for grocery shopping, or just spend wisely. Food is usually a biggie since you’ll be busy a lot during the semester.

Tips + Tricks

  • Some restaurants give discounts with your student ID or even a free drink, so keep it on hand and know the places.
  • Start on your resume; never too early to start building one. Plus you can also think about internships you’d like to do during the summer break.
  • Get a planner to stay on top of things. Never hurts to be organized, school can get hectic.
  • FIND SCHOLARSHIPSΒ – my personal fave, but another way to save money.Β
