Hurricane Irma Aftermath

Hey Guys!!

Screenshot_2017-09-14-12-54-52

If you have been following world news you should know by now what happened to some of the Caribbean islands last week. What started out as a simple low pressure system quickly turned into the most devastating hurricane the Atlantic has ever seen. Hurricane Irma was being called a category 5 ++ which is definitely off the Saffir-Simpson scale. Between a category 3 and 5 a hurricane system can be said to be extremely dangerous. Given we are currently in the season for hurricanes we monitored the storms and prayed for a decrease in intensity or shift towards the north.

Thankfully Antigua (where I reside) was spared quite a bit, however on the other hand our sister island Barbuda wasn’t. The eye of hurricane Irma passed directly over the island which is only 62 square miles. With winds over 185 mph and an incredibly low pressure many of the infrastructure on the island was significantly damaged. Sadly, there was one reported fatality which happened to be 2-year-old boy. Β The island also has a lagoon which houses the Frigate Bird sanctuary which is a popular attraction amongst tourists. Unfortunately the lagoon was breached during the passage of Irma. Assessments will have to be carried out to determine the damaging effects on the island’s wildlife.

After Irma’s destruction there was no communication with the sister isle and officials had to wait hours before they could get a helicopter over to the island. After initial assessments of damage done to the houses and buildings, along with the incoming threat of Hurricane Jose at a Category 4, the decision was made to evacuate the island. In two days with the help of various ferry/boat and helicopter services the island of Barbuda was completely evacuated and deemed inhabitable.

Adventure Time ~ A Photo Diary

Hey Guys!!

I can’t believe I’m only posting this now, please forgive me. However, last month I had the opportunity to visit Redonda to participate in a restoration project.

The island of Redonda exists as remnants of an ancient extinct volcano; it is also politically a part of Antigua & Barbuda. It’s currently uninhabited by humans due its nature (no running water, steepness, inaccessible by transport other than helicopters).

BTW this is all a part of my new job, so you can tell how excited I was for this opportunity. The trip was scheduled for a Saturday at 10 a.m. and once everybody arrived we went through an emergency briefing then it was time to go!!

Hey September!

Hey Guys!!!
August is finally over *after countless weeks* & we have four months left in 2017 which I really want to make count.

So it’s a new month, and I’ve started to think about what I actually want to accomplish with my blog going forward. The mission of my blog has always been the same: β€œTo Inspire” and I intend to keep it that way.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

CONTENT

This won’t change much, you’ll still see:

  • Food: In My Kitchen + Β #EatOuts
  • Adventure/Island life: Traveling, partying and any other activity i do here in Antigua or abroad
  • Inspiration: Let’s Talk + Motivation Monday

With the addition of:

  • Blog Help: As I discover new ways to improve my blog I’d share them with you *it may or may not be new to you, but it may help someone*
  • In your 20s: This may factor into the inspiration headline, but we all know how stressful this decade can get. I’ll talk about my experiences and what I’ve been learning thus far.
  • Guest Posts: Collaborating with other bloggers or maybe an interview I do with someone because I want to share their story about a particular topic.

Currently I Am…. | Pt 1

Snapchat-1781918110

Hey Guys!! Hope all is well. Lately, I’ve been experiencing writer’s block and unsure of which direction to take my blog next. Nonetheless I thought of this post which I’ve been seeing quite a bit on other blogs. Basically it’s a mini life update post *which I’ve also been meaning to do since my first post-grad blog post*.

Let’s get into it, shall we?

Currently, I am….

Wearing Business casual clothes five days a week as opposed to the polo, jeans and lab coat/overalls I was wearing at the beginning of the year. Yes, I got a new job! I’m no longer a Laboratory Technician but rather a Technical Data Consultant. Sounds fancy right??

Listening to – I hardly ever listen to new music or albums; if I’m bumping any type of music it’s a mix from Dj Private Ryan or Chromatic Live.

Admiring – Fellow individuals who graduated with or before me as they make a name for themselves in which ever industry they chose. As well as those working towards a greater good. It’s nice to see young people doing more with their lives.

Determined to – Make a name for myself, both in my field of work and in the blogging world. Also just in general, I want to be known for something good.

Watching – The Blacklist on Netflix, Power and Game of Thrones *ultimately the best show on television #TeamArya* Who’s ready for the finale??

Craving – Starbucks, if it’s one thing I definitely miss from America it’s the frappuccinos. Continue reading “Currently I Am…. | Pt 1”

Let’s Talk: Save Yo’ Money

Hey guys!

First, check the topic……..Now let’s be real, saving money has to be the hardest thing to do everrr, especially when unexpected things come into play. Today imma talk about ways I “saved” money in college, as well as after.

Know when to say no
– every weekend my friends always wanted to turn up, whether it was drinking, eating out or going to the cinema etc. Yes, you gotta be social in university and not spend all your time in the books, BUT know your limit. Sometimes you have to pass up on a few offers because you will have other responsibilities. Continue reading “Let’s Talk: Save Yo’ Money”

Real Vibes & Music

Dubbed The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival, Antigua’s carnival takes place from the last week of July to the first week of August. The first Monday & Tuesday are public holidays given to people to go out and celebrate. Historically, Carnival is all about emancipation and celebration but over the years it has become very main stream. Nonetheless this year was our 60th anniversary and we had the traditional queen shows/pageants, music (calypso and soca) shows, panorama, Jouvert and parades.

Leading up to the holiday events there’s a wide variety of “pre-carnival” fetes with lots of different themes. However for me, my most anticipated weekend is the one right before the holiday. I shouldn’t even say “weekend” because it technically starts from the Sunday to Tuesday; not sure what happens on Friday/Saturday but ISSA NO.

Eat Outs // OJ’s Beach Bar & Restaurant

Hey Guys!!

This past Sunday took us a little south of the island in search of some good food.
The first place we went to was closed, so we quickly decided on a second option which was relatively close by. It also happened to be my first time being at this restaurant.

The general atmosphere was very relaxing and more than expected when entering first. There’s a wide variety of seating available and we opted for upstairs which had the open view of the sea.

Let’s Talk: Social Media Crazy

Hey Guys!
Hope all is well.

As of late I’ve been hearing my friends say that I’m too “Social Media Crazy” and I get how that can be a bad thing. However, I think I have to disagree even though it made me stop and think for a little.

Social media crazy? That’s a bit extreme.

I know of all the hype around people who post lavish lifestyles on the web while they’re struggling in real life; or perhaps posting everything, thinking that if they don’t it would signify it didn’t happen.

However, for me that’s not the case. I simply LOVE taking pictures! Plus, what’s the point of capturing these moments if there’s no-one to share them with?
Hence,I really enjoy different apps for various reasons;

Instagram – for posting pictures and sharing memories with a wider audience

What’s your FUTURE lookin’ like?

Hey guys!!

It’s been a while huh? Well, I’m still here. Work been keeping me busy, and when I’m not doing that it’s a headache to do anything blog related. Finding inspiration to keep going gets difficult at times, but I try my best to continue this journey. Giving up is not an option.

So, let’s get into today’s post *which should also serve as an inspiration*:
What’s your future lookin’ like?

Vision Boardplanning

The point of a vision board is to illustrate visually what you’d like your life to be like in the future. That may include: family, career, travel and other life goals. Pictures may be taken from the internet, magazines and other illustrations you may have at home.

If you’d like to make a physical vision board all you’d need is a bulletin/foam board, pictures, adhesive and other decorative items you may desire. Pinterest is definitely your place to check out for ideas and proper planning methods. Continue reading “What’s your FUTURE lookin’ like?”

Eat Outs // Garden Grill

Hey Guys!!!

Happy Tuesday & I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. Since I returned home last summer I made a list of restaurants I’d love to visit.
Well, one year later I finally made it to one of my top places.

Garden Grill

Located at Dutchman’s Bay near the airport, Garden Grill serves as a rather open, friendly, picturesque restaurant. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on select days. We opted for lunch on Saturday afternoon.

Before you enter, you’re greeted with chalkboard signs welcoming you as well as views of the garden and a pool that you’re welcomed to use. It’s an outdoorsy setting; seating arrangements are under a canopy. Unfortunately, Saturday was incredibly hot so there wasn’t any breeze really. Thus it was slightly uncomfortable.
